Pioneer Peak

img_67201Description:

Pioneer Peak is located aprox. 35miles north of anchorage in the Mat-su. It offers tremendous views of the Knik valley, with a long strenuous hike to the summit.

Favorable Conditions:

Light winds out of north or east preferred.

Weather Beta:
NW, N, NE, E

Parking:
Park at pioneer ridge trail located approximately 4 miles down E.Knik River Road. Mat-su Borough Requires $5 dollars a day parking fee or a $40 annual pass.

Launch:
Hike up the steep trail for about 3 miles. Once you break above the tree line and access the tundra, the launch potential is endless. Trail takes about 2.5-3 hours but the views and the flight potential is amazing. Well worth it.

Landing Zone:
My preferred landing zone is the long straight stretch of road marked in the map. Once winter sets in and the lake is frozen ill move over to the lake, but landing on the road is simple, just clear the LZ from cars and set up your approach.

Site Cautions:
This site inst flown as much as the others, as the long strenuous hike puts people off on it. If you decide to fly it, bring plenty of water and food, as its steep trail takes a tole on your body. There is multiple pic-nick tables along the way to rest. Take your time and enjoy. If you decide to fly it in early-mid winter, bring mountaineering equipment. Boots, full crampons and axe as it gets steep.
